Cleaning and sanitizing of processing equipment:
Cleaning:
- Hemp is an inherently challenging plant to work with as the oily resin is sticky and fiber can jam slicers, and other processing equipment as well as contaminate the walls of vats, conveyors, and packaging machinery.
Sanitization:
- Materials used for human consumption must adhere to federal standards for the protection of the consumer. In this regard processing facilities must be sanitary to the point that infectious pathogens do not pass along to the consumer.
- Material coming into the facility may often be contaminated with soil, mold, fungi, bacteria, heavy metals, pesticides, and other farm chemicals.
- In Fresh-cut operations, the risk is highest between the primary trimming and chopping step and the packaging step. Common sites for this type of cross-contamination are:
- Processing equipment such as slicers, dicers, shredders, blenders, etc.
- Material handling equipment such as conveyors
- Holding containers such as bins, tubs, vats, or baskets
- Collators used to assemble and arrange product before packaging.
